Father's Day Gift Ideas

Father's Day is June 17th, and it's a great opportunity to show Dad how much you love him.  Today we're sharing a few gift ideas he's sure to love.

• Gift certificate to get his car detailed. (Professionally or at home.) 
• Something related to his hobby - for example, nice golf balls, a new video game, grilling tools, etc.
• Dad's Day Out Package.  Include a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant and tickets to do something he loves, such as go to a movie, concert, or football game.
• Signed t-shirt or CD (or vintage record) from his favorite band.
• Homemade Photo Collage.

Celebrate Yo-Yo Day! (June 6th)

Yo-yos are a classic children's toy and have been around for ages.  They're loved by adults and children alike and are a great indoor toy.  Here are a few ideas to help you celebrate Yo-Yo Day with your family.

• Learn the history of the yo-yo.
• Visit the online yo-yo museum with your children.
• Buy your own yo-yos.  Practice using them and doing yo-yo tricks.
• Make a yo-yo on a stick (great for younger children!).

Mommy and Me - Go, Dog, Go!

 Go, Dog Go!

Go, Dog Go! is an adorable children's book that is perfect for beginning readers.  It has great illustrations and a fun story that your children will love.  Once you've finished reading the book, try a couple of these ideas.

• Draw a picture of your dog doing some of the activities in the book.
• Have a party for your pets (or stuffed animals).  Make cupcakes for the humans and homemade dog bones for the pets.
• Use fabric paint to decorate a bandana for your dog to wear.
• Make Origami Dogs.
• Create a customized Pet ID Tag for your pet(s).

June 1st is National Doughnut Day!

Did you know that June 1st is National Doughnut Day?  Here are a few fun ways to celebrate with your family -

• Eat doughnuts!  Many doughnut shops give away free doughnuts in honor of the holiday.  If not, buy some to share with your family and friends.
• Learn why we celebrate National Doughnut Day.
• Go through your clothes and toys to find a few items to donate to the Salvation Army.
• Make 15 Minute Doughnut Holes and/or Semi Homemade Doughnuts.

Decorating Ideas - North Woods Nursery

Carter's Just One Year Bear and Raccoon Baby Blanket 

Isn't this baby blanket cute?  It makes a great inspiration piece for a north woods inspired nursery.  A north woods theme is a good choice if you want a gender neutral nursery that can easily grow with your child and not be too "babyish."  Here are a few decorating ideas.

• Paint the walls a light to medium shade of khaki.  If your trim is already painted, paint it the same color or choose a darker color.  If the trim is stained, leave it plain - this will work well with the north woods theme.
• Use a tree branch as a curtain rod.  Hang tab top curtains on it in a warm blue or green.
• Fill a rustic basket with stuffed toy wild animals, such as a bear, raccoon, etc.
• Bring the outdoors in by adding an artificial pine tree, hanging bird feeders from the ceiling, etc.
• Place a couple of child sized camping chairs at an outdoor table to create an activity corner - this will be cute when your child is a baby and useful once they're a little older.

Outdoor Adventures - Outdoor Movie Night

Warm summer nights are the perfect opportunity to have an outdoor movie night with your family.  There are a couple of different ways to do this -

Option 1

Project a movie onto a sheet in your back yard (you can rent a projector). 

Option 2

Bring your TV and DVD player outside - just make sure there's no chance of rain!

No matter which option you choose, here are a few more fun ideas for your outdoor movie night.

• Set up a mini concession stand on a table in your backyard.  Include small buckets of popcorn, slushies (made with fruit juice or Kool-Aid and crushed ice), nachos, and small boxes of candy (or whatever your family's favorite snacks are).  If you want to have a meal in front of the movie, choose easy to eat items such as chicken nuggets, small cups of veggies and dip, cups of french fries, and/or small bags of chips.
• Set up lounge chairs and lay out blankets around your yard.
• Let children wear pajamas in case they fall asleep during the movie.
• Invite your friends!  This is a great stress free way to throw a party.
